Vera Wong - And Being a Character You Love
I love Vera Wong.
Yes, Wong, not Wang. Though my Vera did name her tea shop after the more famous version.
Vera doesn’t really exist. She’s a character from a series by Jessie Q. Sutanto.
Why do I love this non-existent woman?
Well, she’s got character. You know what I mean?
She’s the kind of person who is so her.
She’s a Chinese mother, so she brings some of her cultural background to the table, but she’s so much more than that. For one thing, she’s lonely. Or at least she starts out lonely. But as she goes on her adventures – both of which involve a murder in the cozy fashion (meaning you don’t have to hear a lot of the details) – she finds other lonely people, and soon none of them are lonely any more. She’s also a tremendous cook and has the tea brewing skills of a savant. She’s kind, too. Compassionate, without taking any crap.
So why am I talking to you about Vera?
Well, for one, I want you all to read this book (and the second one too) so the author will write a third Vera Wong story. I just can’t imagine life without another one. So please, consider reading these wonderful stories and giving them a good review!
Second, I wanted to invite you to think about your own character. Are you a “character” like Vera?
Well, you are a character - even if you aren’t like Vera.
Truth is, we are all the main character in our own movie. Realizing this can help us be sure to be the type of character we want to be – that we LOVE.
Makes sense right. After all, the one person we get to spend time with through our whole life is ourselves. Might as well enjoy it.
And if you need some help seeing yourself clearly, I’ve been reading “characters” my whole life. I love to see what makes people special and help them see it too.
